Inventory methodology

The inventory of the geological heritage of Madeira Island was completed in 2012. Its main objective was to identify the geosites with high scientific value. During this process, 9 thematic categories, divided into subcategories and subdivisionas, were defined.

Several representative sites were assigned to each category. Subsequently, a selection was made according to criteria such as representativeness, integrity and rarity.

The inventory of the geological heritage of Porto Santo Island was completed in 2013, using the same basic criteria as in Madeira Island.

The updated concepts in the field of geodiversity and geoconservation has allowed a restructuring of the previous inventoried geosites in both islands.

This geosite set, that form the geological heritage of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, was further reviewed and standardized with a more recent quantification methodology in 2015.
