Brief description
Porta d’Abra geosite as weel as the entire surrounding region of Ponta de São Lourenço, is an excellent example of the close relationship between tectonic and volcanic structures and volcanic origin on Madeira Island.
Through the excellent exposure of numerous geological sections on the coastal cliffs, it is possible to understand the geometric and stratigraphic relationship between the various geological units and their internal structures. Thus, for example, it is possible to observe the erosive discordance between the Intermediate Volcanic Complex (CVM) and the Upper Volcanic Complex (CVS). Likewise, here you can observe the best examples of dykes exposed by differential marine erosion (in “cabo real”).
