Brief description
The Senhora da Piedade Pyroclastic Cone, also popularly known as Monte Gordo, corresponds to a monogenetic volcano that resulted from Hawaiian-Strombolian-type eruptive activity, in subaerial environment, representative of the Funchal Formation - Upper Volcanic Complex (Pleistocene and Holocene ≈ 1.8 - 0.007 Ma).
At this site, marine erosion exposed the internal structure of the basaltic scoria cone and its main volcanic conduct (dyke) in which the magma was laterally fed. In addition to the explosive volcanic products (falling pyroclasts), there are also effusive products (lava flows), as well as numerous volcanological aspects that allow for the interpretation of this small volcano’s various building stages.
